A dog friendly home is something that is usually high on the priority list of dog owners that are searching for a home. If you need to find a home that will not only work for your family but for your beloved pet as well, look for these signs!
- Near play areas: Is the home within walking distance or a short drive to dog parks, open fields, or trails?
- Grass: Does the home have a yard, even a small one? This would be huge for your dog to have a space outside to run around and play in. One thing to keep in mind: if the yard is not fenced in and the home has an HOA, be sure to check and see if you are allowed to install a fence tall enough to keep your dog in the yard.
- Storage: It’s a huge plus if the home has enough extra storage to keep leashes, dog food, toys, etc.
- Dog friendly neighborhood: Do you see other dogs in the neighborhood? Living in a dog friendly community would be nice and a way to instantly connect with your new neighbors.
- Dog friendly apartments or condos: If you are renting, it can sometimes be difficult to find a pet friendly rental. If you are having a tough time finding a perfect home for both you and your pooch, consider vising the local animal shelter. They should be able to tell you what pet friendly communities are in the area.
- Dog door: If the home doesn’t already have a doggie door, look around to see if there is a space to put one.
- Flooring: Softwood floors that can be scratched easily or bright white carpeting are not good choices for a dog friendly home. Instead, look for flooring that is not easily scratched or stained. Good choices include tile and stone, engineered hardwood or vinyl.
