4th Of July Weekend Activities

The holiday weekend is upon us! Check out this list of 4th of July weekend activities that you can do with the whole family!

  • Go to a parade

  • Make a special 4th of July treat-check out Pinterest for ideas or try these Firecracker Pancakes by Betty Crocker:


-2 cups of Bisquick

– 1 cup of milk

-2 eggs

-1 teaspoon of vanilla


-1 cup powdered sugar

-1/4 cup of milk

-1 teaspoon of vanilla

-red and blue food coloring


  1. Spray a skillet with non-stick cooking spray and heat over medium-low heat.
  2. In a bowl, stir together the pancake ingredients with a whisk until just mixed.
  3. To make a pancake, pour slightly less than a 1/4 cup of batter onto the skillet. Cook for approximately 30 seconds or until the edges look dry and then flip, cooking until pancake is light golden brown.
  4. To create the glaze, beat the powdered sugar, 1/4 cup of milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla with a whisk until it comes together and is smooth. Divide the glaze evenly into 3 bowls, leaving one white and tinting the other two with the blue and red food coloring.
  5. To finish the pancakes, drizzle the red, white, and blue glaze over the pancakes and serve.
  • Host a BBQ for family and friends
  • Head to a beach-Lake Geneva isn’t too far and it’s beautiful!
  • Have a family picnic

Local Events In Plainfield and Shorewood

  • Pirate Party: Happening at the Shorewood Village Hall on Sunday, February 26th from 11 am to 2 pm. This party is for all ages and will include crafts, snacks, and a showing of the movie Pan. The cost is $10 for residents and $15 for non residents and the deadline to register is February 21st.
  • Shorewood Flashlight Egg Hunt: Friday, April 7th at 8 pm at Cene’s Four Seasons Park for kids ages 9-13. This is free and does not require registration.
  • Breakfast with the Bunny: This will take place in Shorewood on Saturday, April 8th at 9 am for kids of all ages. This is for residents only and is free for kids under 2, $8 for kids 5 and under, and $12 for adults. The breakfast will be at Troy Fire Station #2 and will include fun activities, a pancake breakfast, and pictures with the Easter bunny.
  • Shorewood Easter Egg Hunt: Saturday, April 8th at 10:30 am. No registration is required and the event will take place at Cene’s Four Seasons Park. The kids will be divided into 3 groups; group one will go first and will be ages 3-4, group two will go second and will be ages 5-6 and group three will go last and will be ages 7-8.
  • Volunteer Fair at the Plainfield Public Library: March 4th from 10 am until 12 pm. Participants will be able to meet with representatives from 20 local groups including the Plainfield Park District.
  • Who’s Got Talent: March 10th from 6-8 pm at Plainfield South High School. This is for performers ages 10-18 (no bands) and is for both residents and non-residents with no registration fee. Cost of admission is $5 per person, and kids under 2 are free.
  • Tack Swap: March 25th from 10 am until 2 pm at Normantown Equestrian Center in Plainfield. Participants can bring their tack, blankets, clothing and other horse accessories to trade or sell. The cost to reserve an 8 foot table is $20 and it is $10 to bring your own table (8 ft max).  The registration deadline is March 20th.
  • Plainfield Flashlight Egg Hunt: April 7th from 8-9 pm at Clow Stephens. Participants must pre-register as on site registration will not be allowed. Registration deadline is noon on April 6th and the hunt will take place rain or shine. Cost for the event is $6 for residents and $7.50 for non residents.
  • Egg-citing Activities: April 8th from 11 am until 12 pm at Clow Stephens Dog Park. Kids will be able to collect eggs that the Easter bunny left behind and will receive a treat bag at check-in. The Easter bunny will be available from 10 am until 11:30 for photos. This fun event will happen rain or shine.

  • Have a nacho, baked potato or taco bar; not only are these a favorite for most people there is very little prep involved
  • Chill warm beer quickly by placing them in a bin of salted ice

  • Roll slider meat with a rolling pin for easier assembly
  • Create a beverage bar; choose one type of alcohol and have several different mix-ins for guests to choose from
  • Make coasters out of AstroTurf (about $1 per square foot at most hardware stores). These are cheap to make and perfect for the occasion. They can stick around in the man cave after the party.
  • Create a festive table runner by taking chalkboard contact paper and drawing yard lines on it

  • Have a football pinata for the kids

New Years Eve 2016

  • New Year’s Eve Gala by the Church at Joliet includes dinner, worship, praise, and prizes. The party begins at 8:30 pm and the cost is $40 for Adults, Teens/Young Adults 14-18 is $20 and children 13 and under are $10. Party is located at George’s 174 Banquet Hall, 1407 Essington Road in Joliet.


  • Stone City Saloon NYE party from 10 pm to 3 am.  This party is for those 21 and over and includes a dinner buffet, DJ, champagne toast and party favors. Tickets need to be purchased in advance and are $50. For more information call 815-524-4704.


  • Zoo Year’s Eve celebration in the Holly Jolly Theater includes live DJ music, party favors, games, prizes and an early countdown beginning at 8 pm. The celebration is perfect for children ages 6 and under. The cost is $17.85 for adults, seniors 65 and older are $12.50 and children ages 3-11 are $12.50. Active, reservist and retired members of the military are free with an ID. Parking for the event is $11.

Orland Park

  • Noon Year’s Eve Jump at Pump it Up located at 11411 W 183rd Street in Orland Park. Times are 9:30 am to 12 pm and 12:30 pm to 3 pm. The cost is $10 per child and adults can jump free of charge. For more information call 708-479-2220.
