Doing a kitchen remodel can be a lot of work and there are many questions that will need to be answered during the process. Here are 5 questions you didn’t know you would be asking during the project.

1.What profile should I choose for the countertops? Even though it may seem like a minor detail, the shape of the countertop edge can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of the kitchen. An eased edge is currently a popular choice because it’s simple and lends itself to a contemporary design. Typically, a more ornate edge with lot’s of detail is used to create a more traditional and warm look.Photo of an updated kitchen for an article on kitchen remodels.2. What finish should I choose for the fixtures? Going for an all-over cohesive look by using the same finish with all fixtures is a good option as is mixing finishes such as stainless steel and brushed brass. When looking at polished versus brushed finishes, keep in mind that although polished surfaces are shiny and pretty, brushed surfaces hide fingerprints and water marks much better. When choosing appliances, especially ones that will be right next to each other, it’s a good rule of thumb to buy them from the same manufacturer as finishes and colors can vary.

3. What is permitted? It’s important to find out what local building codes are, especially if you are doing a major overhaul of the kitchen. The building codes may or may not affect your  project, but it’s important to check just to be sure.

4. What finish should the countertops be? Not only do you need to choose the material, such as quartz or granite, but you need to decide what finish the stone should have. A polished finish is a popular choice and it gives the surface a reflective and shiny look. Another option is a honed  finish, which is a more natural look and not as shiny. A honed finish hides scratches much easier than a polished finish, but it can also stain more easily if not sealed correctly.
